Institution Overview
Abingdon House School & College is a special education school in London for pupils aged 5 to 19, with learning needs like dyslexia and other social communication problems. This school offers a mainstream style education but with an additional expert approach to provide the best possible learning environment for those with special education needs. A strong focus is put on individual tailored education plans to work with the pupil and how they learn most effectively, making personal achievement and building confidence a priority.
Academics
Abingdon is divided into three, the Junior School (years 2 - 6), Senior School (years 7 - 11) and College, though classes will often have mixed ages to make sure they are structured academically appropriately. The Junior school academic focus areas are Literacy, Science, Numeracy, PSHE, ICT, Humanities, RE, Creative Arts, PE, Drama and Music. Literacy and Numeracy are organised by ability and other classes are taught in groups. Senior School pupils are taught in a way that leaves them prepared for external qualifications, including GCSEs, Functional Skills and Entry Levels, ASDAN and Arts Awards. All classes are taught by subject and in groups matched to their ability. Abingdon College offers guidance on the transition to becoming an adult, as well as endeavours to help develop students' independence and resilience in preparation for the world of work. The curriculum offers the chance to achieve their KS4 qualifications in several subjects, and arranges work experience placements for students to help them in their next steps for the future.
Non-Academics
In all year groups Personal Development is at the core of teaching, which is carried out through lessons on Life and Social Skills, aiming to assist pupils on having positive interactions, developing friendships, self-confidence and self-image. Senior Schools also introduces career and employability skills integrated in lessons. Abingdon House School & College works on an intergrated therapy approach with Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists working with every part of the school timetable. The therapist works with indivudual pupils or in groups along with school staff, with the aim of supporting the academic and personal achievement of every student. Enrichment activities are part of the school day, with engaging and fun activities alongside learning within the curriculum to promote teamwork, critical thinking skills, social skills and more.
Infastructure
Abingdon House School & College is a five storey Edwardian building located within Marylebone, London.
Student Life / Achievement
Student life and the school curriculum is mostly similar to other schools, except Abingdon offers specialist teaching and therapy aimed at children with educational needs. The school day consists of 6 lessons with core subjects in the morning. The day begins at 8.30am and ends at 3.30pm, with a 20 minute wellbeing activity each morning to start the day. All pupils also have at least 3 enrichment lessons per week.
