Academics

Boston College has a wide range of subjects for undergraduates and postgraduates to study, and its relatively small student population gives Boston College a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 meaning students can enjoy a more personalised approach to learning.

Across the eight schools and colleges, the following majors were most popular:

  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Biology
  • Political Science
  • Communication
  • Computer Science
  • Psychology
  • Applied Psychology & Human Development
  • Nursing
  • Marketing

Many degrees can be offered as a double major, allowing a student to enjoy the teaching styles of different faculties and pursue more than one interest in their time at university, with around 25% of undergraduates at Boston opting to study more than one major.

Infastructure

The university is split over four sites. The main Boston College campus is located in Chestnut Hill, Newton, which is a short drive from downtown Boston and is easily accessible by different forms of public transport. Highlights of this campus include Alumni Stadium where students can take in an Eagles game, and cafes and restaurants that have seen Boston Colleges dubbed “college innovator of the year” by Food Management.

The other sites are the Newton Campus, Brighton campus, and Weston Observatory. Newton is about one mile away from the main campus where the Boston College Law School resides, as well as athletics facilities and halls of residence. Brighton Campus is where some faculties are based, including the School of Theology & Ministry, McMullen Museum of Art, and more.

Startup Business Support

For students willing to explore their entrepreneurial capabilities, Boston College has a variety of avenues that are worth exploring.

Start@Shea is a team at Boston College under the Carroll School of Management that is looking for students who are inspired and are motivated to bring their ideas to life. They put students in contact with the right people to make their plans come to fruition and the dedicated team help students hone these entrepreneurial skills so they can be applied further down the line.

There are also notable courses that students may wish to take in regards to entrepreneurship, such as:

  • Entrepreneurial Management
  • Entrepreneurial Finance
  • Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship
  • Product Planning & Strategy

And many more at the Carroll School of Management, housed in the Edmund H. Shea Jr. Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Research And Development

Research is another aspect of academia that Boston College takes very seriously, as it is blessed with excellent resources thanks to its Research 1 institution status. One such way these resources have been utilised is in the building of the new 150,000 square-foot Integrated Science and Engineering Centre (opening December 2021), where the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society can focus their efforts in combating global issues.

About 1 in 3 Boston College students will engage in a research opportunity with their faculty members during their time here, with $66.3 million available in sponsored research grants across their 35 research centres and institutes. Also, with the opportunities that undergraduates receive at Boston, any student can benefit from the experience in undertaking research and improve their career prospects.

Job Placement

Graduates from Boston College enjoy a level of employability that is up with the best universities nationally. 95% of 2019 graduates were in employment or graduate school within six months of their graduation and this is down to Boston’s dedication to making its students work-ready.

Internships and volunteering schemes are wildly popular at Boston College, with 86% of Boston students holding an internship in their time here. 81% participate in community service or volunteer while studying and these opportunities are great because not only do they give back to the community, but they improve a student’s employability through experience.

Career Services can help students with all manner of work-related queries, such as finding internships or volunteering schemes, resumé writing, and put students in touch with industry leaders/professionals. 1,745 unique employers posted jobs with Boston College so it's no wonder to see why 73% of students used Career Services at Boston in their time there.

Student Life

Boston College is made up of students from all 50 US States and 66 countries and counting, so this international student population means there are plenty of clubs and societies for students to link up with likeminded people. There are also 51 intramural sports programmes, as well as 31 intercollegiate Division I teams with around 700 student athletes, making these great avenues to engage with the wider community at Boston.

Boston as a city is Money Magazine’s #1 city in the Northeast, and it’s easy to see why with the sheer amount on offer in Massachusetts’ capital city. From the famous seafood to the historical architecture, there is so much to love in this bustling, international, urban landscape. And, with the college being on the Green Line of the MBTA, downtown Boston is merely a 20 minute ride from campus.

Why should you choose this university?

Boston College should be high on the list for any student that wishes to explore fully the full menu of what a university can offer a student. From inclusivity in regards to research opportunities, variety and flexibility in degree choices, and excellent career progression and industry links, there’s not a lot to dislike about the university.

Students get to enjoy living in Boston and being a part of the rich tapestry of people in that city where something of interest is always happening. The tuition fee is high but students are provided with a first rate education for that money and studying in any major city in the US comes with a high price tag which can be alleviated through scholarships, etc.
