The campus includes as many as 9 museums and galleries, a Sport and Aquatic Centre, a library with over 1.8 million items (including a Rare Book Collection), and the Macquarie University Hospital, which sees use as both a clinic and training space for medical students. Getting to and from campus is also nice and convenient, thanks to the on-campus train station – Macquarie being the only university to have one! The university is also a stone's toss from the nearby Macquarie Shopping Centre.

Startup Business Support

Macquarie University has two major support avenues for startups:

  • Macquarie University Incubator: Founded in 2017. The incubator's Startup Educate Program provides early-stage startups with business knowledge, while the Student Program is designed to fit alongside your chosen course, with programs focused on building practical skills, design thinking, and the ins and outs of how to best present your pitch.
  • Macquarie Park Innovation District: MPID is a collaborative space. Its purposes include beta-testing products, networking events, and providing facilities to startups. Over 180 international companies and 200 small local businesses are associated with the MPID.
Research And Development

Macquarie is considered to have 'Very High' research output by QS's website. A limited number of scholarships are available for international MRes students each year. Support for research students is provided by a number of workshops and online resources, as well as the recently-launched ECR (Early Career Researcher) Network.

Notable research centres on-campus are:

  • The Australian Hearing Hub - Said by the university to be a world-first, this centre researches hearing, language and speech disorders.
  • Mia Mia Child and Family Study Centre – This centre doubles as a childcare centre as well as a research facility.
  • Optus Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub – As well as offering specialist courses, this hub develops solutions to cyber security challenges. Research areas range from computing to engineering to law and criminology.
Job Placement

Macquarie University operates on a 3-step Career Accelerator Initiative to help students find employment. The Career and Employment Service is also available for additional support.

The PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) program is available to all undergraduate students, offering the opportunity to develop employability skills in your chosen industry and gain hands-on experience with practical activity. An impressive 3000 companies, both local and international, are involved with the program.

Meanwhile, Accounting, Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics students can take advantage of the Cooperative Education program, which offers 15 months of industry placement with various employers in the aforementioned fields.

Student Life

It's no little-known secret, especially to someone reading this review, that Sydney is the most popular student city in the country. You know what the city has to offer: you know about its weather, night life, beaches, tourist attractions, and, yes, its pricey cost of living (ouch) -- so what about Macquarie University? Just to name some: it has an 126-hectare campus like an open country field (in the middle of the city!), over 140 student groups covering everything and the kitchen sink, some of the country's best state-of-the-art sports facilities, weekly farmer's markets, and cultural festivals.

Recent Macquarie graduate satisfaction rates from QILT student survey scores (2020-2021) were 77.3% for undergraduates and 80.2% for postgraduates, and support services were ranked 69.2%.

Why should you choose this university?

With two other popular and renowned universities in Sydney, Macquarie University faces some stiff competition at first glance. Let's take a look at the numbers: coming back to the latest QILT scores, Macquarie University was rated more favourably in support services and facilities/resources compared to UNSW Sydney and University of Sydney, but performed slightly lower in overall satisfaction (compared to both), as well as in postgraduate full-time employment (compared to UNSW Sydney).

As noted in Academics, Macquarie boasts the only ranked Classics program in the country.
